Kuala Gandah, National Elephant Conservation Centre (Pahang)

How to Get There
Get on the Kuala Lumpur - Kuantan Highway, exit at Lanchang and turn right after the toll plaza, drive for another 20 minutes.

Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre was established in1989. The centre is the base for the Elephant Relocation Team , which began the elephant translocation programme in 1974.The only one of its kind in Malaysia, the team is dedicated to locating, subduing, and translocating elephant from areas where their habitats were encroached by plantations or other human development, to other suitable habitats throughout the Peninsular such as Taman Negara, Pahang.

Beside being the base for translocation team and home for a number of residents and orphaned elephants, Kuala Gandah also aims to promote public awareness of the elephant's plight in Malaysia and to support research into elephants translocation and conservation. Visitors are welcome throughout the year to ride the elephant within the centre, help wash them in the nearby river and participate in feeding them.

The centre also strive to educate the public about the important of habitat and environmental preservation. Visitors are encouraged to view a video on elephant translocation and special programmes can also be arrange for school groups.Presently, Kuala Gandah houses a number of elephants which were brought in from Thailand and Myanmar. The elephants were trained and used in translocation exercise of wild elephants in problem areas throughout Peninsular Malaysia.

Activities at Kuala Gandah
Visitors are encourage to participate in activities from 12.30pm 0nwards....

2.00pm (Weekdays & Weekends)
-Cleaning & Hand Feeding - Visitors are encourage to hand feed the elephant during their lunch.

*Elephant Rides - Visitors are invited to ride an elephant in a natural way without saddle.
*Bathing - Visitors can ride and Play with the elephant in the river under staff supervation
 *activities are limited for 120 persons only

It is recommended that visitors call or send a letter as pre - booking to the centre to ensure that you can be commodated, especially if you are with a large group. Rides and bathes activities are limited to 120 person only, please make a call for reservation. Also suggest that you bring a change of clothes and towel if you wish to participate in water activities like swimming and washing elephant in the river...
